Years ago I went through a major hurricane with my family when I lived in Florida. After the storm, with no electricity or running water, all the neighbors sat outsidein their sweaty clothes and unwashed bodies, shared chores, fears and good stories.

How to create more spaciousness within our lives, how to have time to smell the roses, or soak in a lavender-scented bubble bath while reading a good book, how to have time to take the kids on adventures or even just a hike…all of these things have become nearly exotic goals. And are almost “sexy” now, in the sense of being of constant high-priority interest while nearly impossible.

When I was five my father, who dreamed of being a writer, moved us to Costa Rica. We got on a big steamship in New York, heading south. This was before good storm tracking. We sailed smack into a hurricane.
My mother, sister, and most of the passengers got seasick, staying below. But I had a cooperative stomach, so I stayed above with my father to watch the waves smash into the thick plate-glass windows.

1. Our tendency is to argue with reality. We all know better; the computer WILL crash again. We can anticipate and allow for it.
Have a back-up drive? Guru on call? Allow a blank half hour in the day? We can minimize this business of getting sidetracked by glitches. Plan to support, not frustrate your self.
